Ascension of the Lord 11½" x  10" 
 
The Ascension of the Lord icon was fashioned in the Byzantine milieu and is based on the account in the Acts of the Apostles, The Lord ascends from the Mount of Olives to his Father and our Father and blesses his disciples. He is carried by two angels clothed in garments in the colors of his holy humanity: the red of his humanity, the blood of the Redeemer, and the gold of his divine glory. The gold background signifies the eternal glory that Christ received before the creation of the world; the entire cosmos is also illuminated by a gentle and peaceful light. The olive trees clap for joy (Psalm 98), and the mountains sing of the victory of the Risen One. Directly beneath Christ stands Mary, surrounded by the apostles. Mary alone looks straight ahead, standing upright, for she sees the Lord Jesus in faith. Two angels stand behind her. She prays and holds her hands raised to Christ. By looking directly at us with love, she draws us all into the mystery of the Ascension.
