Our Lady of the Passion 9½" x 7½"
The Virgin of the Passion is also known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Help.” Mary is identified as “the Mistress of Angels.” Her gaze is mournful and weary, as if saying, “see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow.” The emotional intensity is also manifested in the Child’s right foot, which fidgets with the left and loses its sandal. The Archangels Michael and Gabriel bear the instruments of the Passion, with their hands covered as a sign of respect. This icon is a reproduction of a Cretan icon from the 16th century.
The Greek abbreviations above the figures identify them as the Mother of God ("MP") and Jesus Christ ("OY").
