The Virgin of Tenderness Icon is a modern reproduction of the icon of the "Mother of God," attributed to Theophanes the Greek, one of the most famous icons in Russia. In this icon, we see the Virgin Mary leaning over her child, cheek to cheek. The rounded faces, the simplicity of the scene, the colors of the garments, and the fine white hatching on the forehead and around the eyes recall the style of the Novgorod fresco painter. The people venerate this icon as the "Protectress in all dangers that threaten us."
The Greek abbreviations above the figures identify them as the Mother of God ("MP") and Jesus Christ ("OY").
This is a mounted icon with a raised border. Mounted icons are created from quality reproductions of ancient icons and are printed on museum quality art paper with high quality pigment-based inks. The reproductions are mounted on birch veneered plywood and varnished for protection. The background is made with gold leaf.
